Spiral Binding

The Hodges & Irvine catalog of standard books employ the use the wire spiral binding. The biggest advantage of a spiral is its ability to lay flat on a table or desk. This allows much more use of each page, as other binding methods generate gutter loss. Other binding methods also damage the book if constant use pushes on the center of the book, where the pages are not supported by strength of covers. Wire spirals increase the longevity of a book by understanding and accommodating the intended use of a Table or Function Reservation book.

For all its advantages, care must be taken to ensure a spiral’s functionality. Frequent opening and closing of the book causes the spiral to creep and tighten up at one end. To prevent this, place the closed book on the edge of a table or desk, binding edge out, and open the cover until it hangs straight down over the edge. Now turn the book over and repeat the process. Ideally, this unwinding of the binding should be done every day.
